The Civil War Battle of Antietam

On Sept. 17, 1862, in the bloodiest single day of the Civil War, an estimated 22,700 men died or were wounded.
The map shows the Antietam battleground near Sharpsburg, Md., the lineup of Union and Confederate forces, and the movements of troops in the three battles, Sept. 17, 1862.

In the bloodiest single day of the Civil War, an estimated 22,700 men died or were wounded. The battle was indecisive in a military sense. But it thwarted Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee’s plans to invade the North, sidetracked possible European intervention on the side of the South, and spurred President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
